Pier Luigi Nervi and the Parametrical Architecture

Hangar in Orvieto (Italy), by Pier Luigi Nervi

Decades before the invention of the computer, there was architects who was already able to design a parametric structure, one of those was Pier Luigi Nervi.

He was very capable as structure architect and he well knew that forces follow specific direction. That was the reason why the structure is so perfectly designed in just the needed arches. This was one cloister vault made by structural beams, which were fully capable to stand alone even without the roof.

In this architecture I found the shape type very clear in the vault and in the pillars, instead the beams that composed the roof indicate the structural wireframe.

I think it is very interesting studying the birth of the parametric architecture made without computer instruments in order to fully understand the theory. It will be easier learning how the computer program works.
